The Student of the Year Awards is an annual event that seeks to recognise excellence in student education and skills. The Brief and nomination documentation is made available to Colleges and TAFEs Australia wide when nominations are being sought.

Generally, nominations are forwarded to teachers during July / August each year with the Awards being presented at the Institute's Annual General Meeting in November.

The process of nomination entails a student to be nominated by his / her teacher, the student nominations are processed by a sub committee of industry professionals that provides a short list of students who are invited to present for interview. Prizes include cash, Institute membership, subscriptions and industry prizes as advertised at the time of announcing the Awards.
